Thomas Nast, illustrator of Clement Clarke Moore’s famous Night Before Christmas poem, is credited with bringing us the kinder, jollier Santa Claus that we know today. Nast combined this tradition of St. Nicholas with German folk traditions of elves to draw his first Santa in 1862.Santa Claus thrived thereafter in American culture, both Christian and secular.
