“History of Santa” #5

The American version of the Santa Claus figure was inspired by the Dutch legend of Sinterklaas (also called De Goedheiligman) brought to New York as early as the 1600s. It was author Washington Irving who popularized in America the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas. As part of a hoax, Irving, adopting the pseudonym “Diedrich Knickerbocker,” published the satirical A History of New York on December 6, 1809, to immediate critical and popular success. His new version had Santa dropping gifts down chimneys while riding a horse drawn wagon over treetops.
